Wayne
Gretzky - Bauer Air knit, size 56.
This is just one of the rarest jerseys ever to hit the hobby to date. There has
only been two real Team Canada jerseys released to the
general public from this tournament but not a Team Canada Wayne
Gretzky. The provenance of this jersey is unbelievable. A lady that
worked for the CNIB (Canadian National Institute of the Blind) received
this jersey directly from Wayne Gretzky himself. The lady was in
charge of a photo session and in appreciation to one of Wayne's #1
charities he gave her this jersey. The jersey has been taken to the
Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto and shown to Phil Pritchard, we matched it
up against the Hall's only Team Canada jersey from this tournament and to
our amazement it was also a White Wayne Gretzky. They match up exactly
in every detail. Except that ours shows more game use. The jersey
has also been shown to Walter Gretzky. This jersey is so rare that
according to Walter he does
not even personally own one in his collection. With over 100 man hours of research logged into this
jersey it was finally photo matched and video matched. Here is the
story. On August 26th Team Canada plays Russia to a 4-4
tie in Calgary wearing
the white jerseys, during the game Sergei Gonchar leveled Eric
Lindros with a butt-end hit to the back of the head and Lindros went face
first down to the ice. Cutting his forehead on impact to the ice, and
after lying motionless for several minutes, Eric was helped off the
ice. This is were Wayne's jersey picks up blood stains on his left
shoulder just below the Team Canada emblem. Which can been seen in
the photo up top. This is a dead on 100% photo match. The
photo comes from the book "Forever an Oiler" written by Terry
Jones and the Edmonton Sun. The jersey is also photo matched to the
crooked Captains "C", you can see that it is pinched in a little
as compared to the one at the Hall. The jersey is also photo matched
to the two overtime win Semi-Final game vs. Sweden. Wayne used a long cuff
Easton glove with a red band at the end of the glove, this red band then
bleed into the jerseys left sleeve and can clearly be seen in several
photo's. Also to note, Bauer first printed on the Bauer logo on the chest
then sewn over the top a patch with a corrected and more readable
"R" on the end of Bauer. This area on the sleeve actually turned
the sleeve to a pinkish hue.
My research has concluded that this jersey was worn in the following
games:
August 26th CDN vs. Russia 4-4 in Calgary
August
27th CDN vs. Slovakia 7-4 in Edmonton
September 7th CDN vs. Sweden 3-2 in
2OT in Philadelphia
